Historical Trajectory

Phase I: Rise

Nader Shah, a military commander from the Afshar tribe of Khorasan, rose to prominence defending Safavid Iran against Ottoman and Afghan incursions. After restoring Safavid authority, he deposed the last Safavid shah in 1736 and proclaimed himself ruler, founding the Afsharid dynasty. His campaigns rapidly extended Iranian power eastward into Afghanistan and the Indian subcontinent, and westward against the Ottomans and into the Caucasus.

Phase II: Zenith

At its peak under Nader Shah, the empire encompassed modern Iran, the Caucasus, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, parts of Central Asia, Arabia, Iraq, and northwestern India. His 1739 sack of Delhi and seizure of the Peacock Throne brought enormous wealth to Iran. This territorial reach was the greatest Iran had achieved since the Sasanian Empire, temporarily restoring Persian regional dominance.

Phase III: Decline

Nader Shah's assassination in 1747 triggered immediate fragmentation. His empire was divided among the Zand dynasty in Iran, the Durrani Empire in Afghanistan, and the Khanate of Kalat. Afsharid authority shrank to a small region in Khorasan. In 1796, Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar extinguished the remaining Afsharid state, founding the Qajar dynasty and reunifying much of Iran under new rule.
