Historical Trajectory
Phase I: Rise
Amid escalating conflict with the Spanish Monarchy, the Junta de Braços of Catalonia, led by Pau Claris, assumed sovereignty over the Principality after September 1640. As royal armies advanced on Barcelona, the assembly formally proclaimed the Catalan Republic on 16 January 1641, seeking to establish an independent state under French protection during the broader Reapers' War.
Phase II: Zenith
The republic existed for only weeks as a formally acknowledged independent entity. Its leadership negotiated French support and operated through existing Catalan institutions, including the Generalitat. The state represented the height of Catalan autonomous ambition during the Reapers' War, asserting sovereignty and attempting to secure external backing to resist Spanish military pressure.
Phase III: Decline
Facing a desperate military situation and direct French pressure, the Junta de Braços proclaimed Louis XIII Count of Barcelona on 23 January 1641, just days after independence was declared. This initiated a personal union with France, completed by December 1641. Louis XIV inherited the title in 1643 and held it until 1652, when Catalonia was reincorporated into the Spanish Monarchy.
