Historical Trajectory
Phase I: Rise
The Duchy of Florence was established in 1532 when Pope Clement VII, a member of the Medici family, appointed Alessandro de' Medici as Duke of the Florentine Republic, converting the long-standing republic into a hereditary principality. This transition ended centuries of republican governance in Florence and placed the Medici dynasty in direct sovereign control over the city and its territories in Tuscany.
Phase II: Zenith
Under the second Duke, Cosimo I de' Medici, the duchy consolidated and expanded its power significantly. Cosimo built a formidable Florentine navy, purchased the strategically valuable island of Elba, and conquered the rival Republic of Siena, greatly enlarging the duchy's territorial extent across central Tuscany. His capable administration and military ambitions made Florence the dominant power in the Italian peninsula.
Phase III: Decline
The Duchy of Florence was not destroyed but elevated: in 1569, Pope Pius V recognized Cosimo I's achievements by granting him the title of Grand Duke of Tuscany, transforming the duchy into a grand duchy. The Medici dynasty continued to rule this expanded state until 1737, when the line died out and Tuscany passed to the House of Habsburg-Lorraine.
