Historical Trajectory

Phase I: Rise

The Fifth Republic was established in February 1981 by Chun Doo-hwan, a military general who rose to power following the October 1979 assassination of long-serving president Park Chung Hee. Exploiting the ensuing political vacuum and military rule of the Fourth Republic, Chun consolidated authority and inaugurated a new constitutional order, positioning himself and the Democratic Justice Party as the singular governing force in South Korea.

Phase II: Zenith

Under Chun Doo-hwan, South Korea continued rapid industrial and economic expansion built on earlier export-led growth policies, achieving significant GDP gains through the 1980s. The government hosted international events, including preparations for the 1988 Seoul Olympics, projecting a modernizing image abroad, while domestically maintaining strict authoritarian controls over political opposition, press freedom, and civil liberties.

Phase III: Decline

Growing public opposition to authoritarian rule culminated in the Gwangju Uprising and, more decisively, the June Democracy Movement of 1987. Mass protests compelled the government to accept democratic reforms. Roh Tae-woo won the December 1987 presidential election, and upon adoption of a new constitution, the Sixth Republic of Korea was formally established on 25 February 1988, ending the Fifth Republic's seven-year authoritarian rule.
