Historical Trajectory
Phase I: Rise
The First Republic emerged from the French Revolution when the newly convened National Convention unanimously abolished the constitutional monarchy on 21 September 1792. France was declared 'one and indivisible' days later. The Republic was born amid external war with much of Europe and intense internal political struggles, as revolutionary factions competed to define the new state's character and institutions.
Phase II: Zenith
The Republic's most intense phase saw the National Convention govern during the Reign of Terror under the Committee of Public Safety, mobilising mass armies that repelled foreign coalitions and expanded French influence across neighboring territories. The revolutionary government enacted sweeping legal, administrative, and social reforms that dismantled the ancien régime and redrew the political map of Western Europe.
Phase III: Decline
The Thermidorian Reaction ended the Terror in 1794, leading to the more conservative Directory (1795–1799). Chronic instability, corruption, and military pressures eroded the Directory's authority. Napoleon Bonaparte's coup of 18 Brumaire (November 1799) replaced it with the Consulate, concentrating power in Napoleon's hands. The Republic formally ended on 18 May 1804 when Napoleon proclaimed himself Emperor of the French.
