Phase I: Rise
Founded according to Irish tradition as the territory of the Laighin tribe, Leinster achieved early hegemony across Ireland at the expense of the Ulster-based Érainn. Several early Leinster kings, including Úgaine Mór and Labraid Loingsech, also held the High Kingship of Ireland. Over time, however, the kingdom lost ground to its Connachta kinsmen, and the Southern Uí Néill carved out the Kingdom of Meath from its northern territories.
Phase II: Zenith
Between the 9th and 11th centuries, Leinster experienced a resurgence under kings such as Diarmait mac Máel na mBó, the first Leinster king to hold the High Kingship of Ireland in centuries. His son Murchad briefly controlled the Kingdom of Dublin and the Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. The kingdom also periodically reasserted control over Osraige, expanding its influence across a significant portion of eastern and southern Ireland.
Phase III: Decline
The 12th-century Norman invasion, catalysed by Diarmait mac Murchada's appeal for outside aid, drew Leinster into transformative conflict. The kingdom progressively lost territory to Norman settlers, with large areas becoming the Pale under English lordship and the Earldom of Kildare passing to the FitzGeralds. A reduced Leinster persisted in Wexford, Carlow, and Wicklow until the early 17th century, when it was absorbed into the Tudor Kingdom of Ireland and reconstituted as the Province of Leinster.
