Historical Trajectory

Phase I: Rise

The Nationalist government was established by the Kuomintang in Guangzhou in 1925, following reorganization of Sun Yat-sen's military base. After Sun's death, Chiang Kai-shek led the Northern Expedition (1926–1928), defeating Beiyang warlords and rival governments to nominally reunify China. With the capital established in Nanjing in 1927, the KMT proclaimed itself the legitimate government of the Republic of China and consolidated power as a one-party state under Chiang's leadership.

Phase II: Zenith

During the Nanjing Decade (1927–1937), the Nationalist government pursued modernization programs in infrastructure, education, and law while asserting central authority over previously fragmented regions. The government established formal diplomatic recognition internationally, standardized currency, and promoted industrialization. Despite persistent challenges from Communist insurgencies and regional warlords, this period represented the government's greatest administrative reach and relative political stability before external pressures intensified.

Phase III: Decline

The Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945) forced the government to relocate its wartime capital to Chongqing, devastating the country's economy and infrastructure. Following Japan's defeat, renewed civil war with the Chinese Communist Party escalated rapidly. Communist forces under Mao Zedong gained decisive military advantage, and the Nationalist government formally dissolved on 20 May 1948, replaced by a constitutional government that itself retreated to Taiwan in 1949.
