Historical Trajectory

Phase I: Rise

The principality emerged following the assassination of Nader Shah in 1747, which dissolved central authority across his former domains. The 'Izz al-Dinlu Qajars, who had governed the Merv oasis as Safavid appointees, seized the opportunity to declare independence. Under their rule, the principality maintained stable relations with the Bukharan ruler Daniyal Biy, allowing it to consolidate control over the agriculturally productive Merv oasis.

Phase II: Zenith

At its height, the principality controlled the Merv oasis, a strategically located and irrigated region in Central Asia of long-standing commercial and agricultural importance. Its ruler Bayram 'Ali Khan Qajar oversaw a polity that benefited from cordial ties with Bukhara, enabling relative stability and local autonomy in a period of wider regional fragmentation following the collapse of Nader Shah's empire.

Phase III: Decline

When Shah Murad succeeded his father Daniyal Biy as ruler of Bukhara in 1785, he adopted an expansionist policy. His forces launched a military campaign against the principality, killing its ruler Bayram 'Ali Khan Qajar. By 1788, the entire Merv oasis was conquered and annexed into the Bukharan state. The last ruler, Mohammad Husayn Khan, escaped to Iran, ending the principality's existence.
