Historical Trajectory
Phase I: Rise
In 1834, the Maryland State Colonization Society sponsored the settlement of freed and freeborn African Americans from Maryland on the West African coast, establishing Maryland-in-Africa. The colony remained separate from neighboring African-American settlements that merged into the Commonwealth of Liberia in 1838, as the colonization society wished to preserve its local trade monopoly. On February 2, 1841, the settlement was reorganized as the Independent State of Maryland.
Phase II: Zenith
Following an independence referendum in 1853, Maryland in Liberia declared full independence on May 29, 1854, with Harper as its capital. The republic maintained its own government and institutions, reflecting the aspirations of its African-American founders to build a self-governing state. It operated trade networks along the West African coast and developed civic structures modeled on American republican governance.
Phase III: Decline
The Republic of Maryland faced persistent pressure from neighboring indigenous peoples and lacked the resources to sustain itself as an independent state. After suffering military conflicts it could not manage alone, the republic sought union with the larger Republic of Liberia for security and stability. In 1857, Maryland in Liberia was formally merged into Liberia, ending its brief existence as a sovereign entity.
