Historical Trajectory

Phase I: Rise

In 1804, Serbian peasants and local leaders rose against Ottoman janissary abuses in the Sanjak of Smederevo, electing Karađorđe as their supreme commander. What began as a local revolt against misrule rapidly escalated into a broader war for autonomy. The rebels seized Belgrade in 1806 and established governing institutions, transforming the uprising into a functioning proto-state within a few years.

Phase II: Zenith

At its height, Revolutionary Serbia controlled much of the Sanjak of Smederevo and organized rudimentary administrative and judicial structures. The Ottomans formally recognized its autonomous status in January 1807, though the Serbs rejected this as insufficient. The state maintained diplomatic contacts with Russia and other powers, reflecting its ambitions beyond a mere rebellion toward genuine statehood.

Phase III: Decline

Following Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812, Ottoman forces were freed to focus on Serbia. Without Russian support, the uprising collapsed in 1813 and Karađorđe fled into exile. Despite its suppression, the uprising inspired the Second Serbian Uprising in 1815, which ultimately secured semi-independence and the creation of the Principality of Serbia under Miloš Obrenović in 1817.
