Cause

Argentina severed football relations with Uruguay following the 1930 FIFA World Cup final, in which Uruguay defeated Argentina 4–2. Argentina alleged heavy pressure and aggressions directed at their delegation before and during the tournament, creating a diplomatic rift that delayed the next championship by six years.

Event

The 1935 South American Championship, the thirteenth edition of the continental football tournament, was held in Lima, Peru, from 6 to 27 January 1935. Classified as an Extraordinary Championship with no trophy at stake, it featured only four nations and was organised to coincide with the fourth centenary of the founding of Lima.

Consequence

The tournament functioned as a qualifying competition for the 1936 Summer Olympics, giving Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay a path to Olympic football participation. The decision to resume the championship despite the earlier diplomatic rift helped restore continental football competition in South America.
