Brazil and Czechoslovakia each advanced through the 1962 FIFA World Cup tournament held in Chile. Brazil entered as defending champions despite losing key player Pelé to injury in the group stage, relying on a squad that included Garrincha and replacement forward Amarildo to progress to the final.
On 17 June 1962, Brazil faced Czechoslovakia in the World Cup final at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago. Czechoslovakia took an early lead, but Brazil responded to win 3–1, securing their second successive World Cup title. The two sides had previously met in the group stage, ending in a goalless draw.
Brazil's victory confirmed only the second successful defence of the World Cup title in the tournament's history, after Italy's back-to-back wins in 1934 and 1938. The result cemented Brazil's status as the dominant football nation of the era and was achieved notably without Pelé for most of the tournament.
