Entering the 1965 German Grand Prix as a dominant championship contender, Jim Clark had already demonstrated commanding form throughout the season. His Lotus-Climax was competitive enough that a strong result at Nürburgring could seal the drivers' title early, with three rounds still remaining on the calendar.
On August 1, 1965, Clark started from pole position and led every lap of the 15-lap race at Nürburgring, completing a grand slam — pole, fastest lap, and victory. Graham Hill finished second and Dan Gurney third. It was the 27th German Grand Prix and round seven of the 1965 Formula One season.
Clark's win gave him the 1965 World Championship of Drivers with three races to spare, and simultaneously secured the 1965 International Cup for Formula One Manufacturers for Lotus. It also marked Clark's third grand slam of the season and the last of his racing career.
