The 1970 Formula One season brought the field to the original Spa-Francorchamps circuit for race four of thirteen, with BRM fielding Pedro Rodríguez and March entering Chris Amon. Rodríguez had demonstrated exceptional pace the prior week, recording a 160 mph lap in a sports car race at the same venue.
On 7 June 1970, Pedro Rodríguez won the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, giving BRM its first victory since the 1966 Monaco Grand Prix. Chris Amon set a new F1 lap record at 152 mph for March, and Ignazio Giunti made his Formula One debut, finishing fourth in a Ferrari.
Rodríguez's victory proved to be both his last Formula One win and the final win for Dunlop in the series. It was also the last time Formula One competed on the original Spa-Francorchamps layout, and remained the final victory by a Mexican driver in Formula One until the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix.
