The German Grand Prix returned to Nürburgring in 1971 after a one-year absence at Hockenheimring, following safety improvements to the circuit. The race distance was shortened to 12 laps. Pedro Rodríguez's death at Norisring the previous month prompted Vic Elford to replace him in the entry.
Held on 1 August 1971, Jackie Stewart took pole position and dominated throughout, with teammate François Cevert finishing second for a Tyrrell 1-2. Clay Regazzoni finished third after holding up Cevert for over a quarter of the race. Mike Beuttler and Jo Siffert were both disqualified for using a short chute into the pit lane.
The Tyrrell 1-2 result strengthened the team's standing in the 1971 championship season. The race briefly held the record for fewest official laps completed in a Formula One Grand Prix, a distinction later surpassed by the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix, which was classified after just one lap.
