The 1972 Formula One season was well underway, with Emerson Fittipaldi leading the championship. Brands Hatch hosted the seventh round, formally sponsored by John Player, drawing the full field of competitive drivers including Ronnie Peterson, Graham Hill, and François Cevert.
Fittipaldi drove his Lotus 72D to victory at Brands Hatch on 15 July 1972. The race was disrupted when Ronnie Peterson suffered an engine failure with fewer than two laps remaining and crashed into the parked cars of Hill and Cevert. Arturo Merzario finished sixth on his Formula One debut with Ferrari.
Fittipaldi's win strengthened his grip on the 1972 Drivers' Championship, which he ultimately claimed. Merzario's sixth-place debut with Ferrari proved historically notable: he remained the last driver to make his Formula One debut with the team until Oliver Bearman did so at the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, 52 years later.
