The 1972 Formula One season brought the German Grand Prix to the Nürburgring as the eighth of twelve rounds in both the World Championship of Drivers and the International Cup for Formula One Manufacturers, with Ferrari seeking a rare competitive result after struggling for wins that season.
Belgian driver Jacky Ickx, driving for Ferrari, won the 14-lap race on 30 July 1972, claiming pole position, leading every lap, and setting the fastest lap — a feat known as a Grand Chelem. His Ferrari teammate Clay Regazzoni finished second and Ronnie Peterson was third in a March-Ford.
The victory was Ickx's eighth and final World Championship race win, and Ferrari's sole victory of the 1972 season. Despite this result, the championship that year was dominated by Emerson Fittipaldi, and the race did not alter the overall standings significantly in Ferrari's or Ickx's favour.
