Borussia Mönchengladbach entered the 1974–75 UEFA Cup having previously reached the 1973 final, where they were eliminated. Two years on, the club were among West Germany's leading sides and sought to convert that prior final appearance into a title, while FC Twente emerged as the Netherlands' representative challenger.
The 1974–75 UEFA Cup final was contested over two legs at the Rheinstadion in Düsseldorf and the Diekman Stadion in Enschede. Borussia Mönchengladbach defeated FC Twente by an aggregate score of 5–1, securing the club's first UEFA Cup title in the fourth edition of the competition.
Borussia Mönchengladbach's victory ended the drought of West German clubs in UEFA Cup competition, as no West German side had previously won the UEFA Cup or its predecessor, the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. It also marked the first final without English representation since the 1966 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, signalling a shift in European club football's balance of power.
