UEFA organized its Cup competition as a third-tier club tournament to give more European clubs competitive opportunities. Juventus, having previously lost one European Cup final and two Inter-Cities Fairs' Cup finals, entered the 1976–77 edition seeking their first major European title. Athletic Bilbao reached the final as the first Spanish club to do so in the UEFA Cup.
The 1976–77 UEFA Cup final was contested over two legs between Juventus and Athletic Bilbao, finishing 2–2 on aggregate. Juventus were awarded the trophy under the away goals rule, claiming their first UEFA Cup title. The final was staged at Stadio Comunale in Turin and at San Mamés in Bilbao.
Juventus secured their first major European trophy, marking the first time a Southern European club won the UEFA Cup. For Italian clubs, it was the last European title for seven years. Athletic Bilbao's defeat meant Spain would wait until 1985 before fielding another UEFA Cup finalist, continuing a European trophy drought dating back to 1966.
