The 1980 Formula One season had seen three different winners in its opening four rounds, leaving the championship tightly contested. Didier Pironi, driving a Ligier JS11/15, arrived at Zolder with competitive machinery and the momentum of a competitive Ligier team that had already featured among the frontrunners early in the season.
At the Zolder circuit on 4 May 1980, Didier Pironi led the 72-lap race to claim his first World Championship victory, finishing 47 seconds ahead of Alan Jones in a Williams FW07B. Carlos Reutemann completed the podium in third, while championship leader René Arnoux took fourth in his Renault RE20.
Pironi's win made him a fourth different race winner in five rounds, intensifying the 1980 title fight. Jones closed to within two points of series leader Arnoux, while Pironi and Piquet also remained in championship contention. Jones would ultimately go on to claim the 1980 drivers' title, and this result proved a key step in his championship charge.
