To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the FIFA World Cup, which was first held in Uruguay in 1930, the Uruguayan Football Association proposed a special tournament gathering all previous World Cup champion nations. FIFA President João Havelange endorsed the initiative and FIFA granted it official status at its July 1980 congress.
The tournament, officially called the World Champions' Gold Cup and popularly known as Mundialito, was held at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo from 30 December 1980 to 10 January 1981. Six nations participated — the five World Cup-winning countries available plus the Netherlands as replacement for England, who declined due to scheduling conflicts.
Uruguay won the tournament and was officially declared by FIFA via its newsletter as 'champions of all world champions.' The event reinforced Uruguay's symbolic centrality to World Cup history and demonstrated FIFA's willingness to sanction commemorative international competitions organized by member associations.
