Alain Prost qualified on pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. Nelson Piquet led the opening ten laps from the front in his Brabham-BMW until his car suffered oil pressure failure, handing Prost the lead with the bulk of the race remaining.
Prost controlled the remaining 61 laps to win, with teammate Niki Lauda finishing second and Nigel Mansell third in a Lotus-Renault after edging out teammate Elio de Angelis, who was lapped by Prost with three laps remaining. The race had 27 starters, including local driver Huub Rothengatter in a Dutch-orange-painted Spirit-Hart.
The McLaren 1-2 finish clinched the 1984 Constructors' Championship, the team's first since 1974. Off-track, Ayrton Senna's move from Toleman to Lotus for 1985 was announced two days later, prompting Toleman to suspend him from the Italian Grand Prix. Nigel Mansell was also confirmed as signing with Williams for 1985.
