UEFA had banned English clubs from European competition following the 1985 Heysel Stadium disaster, which killed 39 people before the European Cup final. After five years, the ban was lifted, allowing English clubs to re-enter continental competition for the 1990–91 season.
The 1990–91 UEFA Cup, the 20th edition of the competition, culminated in an all-Italian final between Internazionale and Roma. The two legs were staged at San Siro in Milan and the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Internazionale won on aggregate 2–1, claiming their first UEFA Cup title and their first European honour in 26 years.
Internazionale's victory ended a lengthy wait for European silverware and marked the second consecutive year that two Italian clubs contested the UEFA Cup final, confirming Italy's dominance in European club football at the time. English clubs' return also began restoring their presence on the continental stage.
