The 1994 Formula One season was overshadowed by the deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna at Imola. Williams needed replacements: David Coulthard was promoted for Senna's seat, and Andrea Montermini was elevated from test driver for Simtek following Ratzenberger's death.
On 29 May 1994 at the Circuit de Catalunya, Damon Hill drove his Williams-Renault to victory in the 65-lap Spanish Grand Prix, beating championship leader Michael Schumacher by 24 seconds. Schumacher's Benetton was stuck in fifth gear for most of the race. Mark Blundell finished third for Tyrrell-Yamaha.
The result gave Williams and Hill their first win of a troubled 1994 season. Montermini's heavy crash ended his race debut but he escaped serious injury. David Coulthard began a long Formula One career, and it proved the last podium for both Mark Blundell and the Tyrrell team.
