The race ran from 17 May to 8 June 1997, starting in Venice and finishing in Milan. Ivan Gotti of the Saeco–Estro team won the general classification, with Pavel Tonkov second and Giuseppe Guerini third. Additional classification wins went to Cipollini, González, and Konyshev.
