Heading into the sixth round of the 1997 Formula One World Championship, Michael Schumacher held the Drivers' Championship lead over Jacques Villeneuve. The Circuit de Catalunya in Montmeló hosted the race, with Villeneuve starting from pole position and Schumacher aiming to extend his advantage in his Ferrari.
On 25 May 1997, Villeneuve led the 64-lap Spanish Grand Prix from pole and won comfortably. Olivier Panis, starting 12th, drove impressively to finish second in a Prost-Mugen-Honda, six seconds adrift. Jean Alesi claimed third in a Benetton-Renault, while Schumacher finished fourth in his Ferrari.
