Heading into the race, the 1999 Drivers' Championship was tightly contested: Mika Häkkinen and Eddie Irvine were tied on points, with Heinz-Harald Frentzen ten points back and David Coulthard two points further behind. Häkkinen had made a costly error at the previous round in Monza, tightening the title battle considerably.
Held on 26 September 1999 at the Nürburgring, the race featured an unusually high number of retirements. Johnny Herbert drove his Stewart-Ford to victory, with Jarno Trulli second for Prost-Peugeot and Rubens Barrichello third in the other Stewart. Both Ferraris failed to score points, and Minardi's Marc Gené claimed sixth, the team's first points since 1995.
Häkkinen moved two points clear of Irvine in the Drivers' Championship, while McLaren extended their Constructors' lead over Ferrari to twelve points. The result marked Herbert's third and final F1 win, Stewart's only victory, Trulli's first podium, and the last podium for the Prost team. No English driver would win again until Jenson Button at the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix.
