Michael Schumacher had been injured before the race, leaving Ferrari without its lead driver. Mika Salo was brought in as stand-in team-mate to Irvine, who was already pushing for the championship title in Schumacher's absence.
Held on 1 August 1999 at the Hockenheimring, the German Grand Prix saw Irvine take victory after Salo obeyed team orders and moved aside to cede the lead. Championship contender Häkkinen crashed out on lap 25 due to a tyre failure, while Frentzen finished third in his home race.
Irvine recorded his second successive win, strengthening his position in the Drivers' Championship. Irvine symbolically gave his winner's trophy to Salo in recognition of the Finn's role in the result. Damon Hill faced renewed speculation about his Formula One future following alleged retirement of a healthy car.
