Lazio defeated Manchester United 1–0 in the 1999 UEFA Super Cup on 27 August 1999. Chilean striker Marcelo Salas scored the only goal in the 35th minute before a crowd of 14,461 at the Stade Louis II in Monaco, giving Lazio the trophy.
This match proved to be the final UEFA Super Cup to feature a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup holder, as that tournament was discontinued after the 1998–99 season. From 2000 onward, the Super Cup has been contested between the UEFA Champions League winner and the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League winner.
