English clubs had been banned from European competition between 1985 and 1990 following the Heysel disaster. Liverpool, as a former dominant force in European football, returned to continental competition during the post-ban era and qualified for the 2000–01 UEFA Cup, seeking their first European trophy since the suspension.
Liverpool defeated Deportivo Alavés in the UEFA Cup final via a golden goal in extra time, claiming their third UEFA Cup title. The tournament was the 30th edition of the competition, with defending champions Galatasaray unable to participate having qualified for the UEFA Champions League instead.
Liverpool completed a historic cup treble by also winning the FA Cup and League Cup that season. Their UEFA Cup victory marked the first European trophy won by an English club in the post-Heysel era. The final also stands as the only major European club cup competition concluded by a golden goal before the rule was abolished in 2002.
