Mika Häkkinen started from pole and led early, but was passed by Schumacher on lap two. Häkkinen later retired due to an engine oil pressure shortage, removing the primary threat to Schumacher's lead. David Coulthard closed in during the final laps as Schumacher managed his own oil pressure issue, but could not mount a challenge.
The 2000 Brazilian Grand Prix was held on 26 March at Autódromo José Carlos Pace in São Paulo. Schumacher led from lap two onward, surviving two pit stops and a late oil pressure concern to win the 71-lap race. Fisichella finished second and Frentzen third on the road, before post-race scrutineering altered the result.
Coulthard was disqualified from his second-place finish due to an illegal front wing endplate; McLaren's appeal was denied. This moved Fisichella to second and Frentzen to third. Schumacher's championship lead grew to 12 points, and Ferrari extended their Constructors' Championship advantage to 18 points over Benetton, now elevated to second place.
