FIFA's quadrennial futsal championship, held every four years since 1989, rotated its host nation to Guatemala for 2000. Brazil had dominated the event, winning each of the first three editions, entering the tournament as heavy favourites to claim a fourth consecutive title.
The 2000 FIFA Futsal World Championship was held in Guatemala from 18 November to 3 December 2000. Sixteen national teams competed, with Spain defeating Brazil in the final to claim the championship title in what was the first FIFA tournament ever staged in Guatemala.
Spain's victory ended Brazil's three-championship winning streak and made Spain the first nation other than Brazil to win the FIFA Futsal World Championship. This distinction remained unique to Spain until Portugal claimed the title in 2021, marking a gradual broadening of competitive dominance in international futsal.
