Going into the 2002 Canadian Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher and Ferrari held commanding leads in both World Championships. Juan Pablo Montoya claimed pole position with the fastest time in qualifying, positioning Williams as the primary challenger for the race.
Held on 9 June 2002 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve before a record 117,000 spectators, the 70-lap race saw early lead changes among Barrichello, Montoya, and Schumacher, complicated by a safety car period on lap 14. Schumacher ultimately took and held the lead from lap 51 onward, finishing ahead of Coulthard and Barrichello.
Schumacher's victory, his sixth of the season and 59th of his career, widened his Drivers' Championship advantage to 43 points. Ferrari also extended their Constructors' lead to 32 points over Williams, with McLaren a further 21 points back and nine races remaining.
