Boca Juniors of Argentina won the 2003 Copa Libertadores, and AC Milan of Italy won the 2002–03 UEFA Champions League, qualifying both clubs to contest the annual Intercontinental Cup, which paired the top club champions of South America and Europe.
The match was played on 14 December 2003 at International Stadium Yokohama before 70,000 spectators. Matías Donnet was named man of the match, scoring what would prove to be the final goal in Intercontinental Cup history decided in regular or extra time.
Because the 2004 Intercontinental Cup final was goalless after extra time and settled by penalty shoot-out, Donnet's goal in the 2003 edition was the last open-play goal before the competition was abolished and superseded by the FIFA Club World Cup.
