The 2003 Formula One season was underway with McLaren's Kimi Räikkönen leading the Drivers' Championship. Ferrari had yet to win a race that season, and Michael Schumacher and his brother Ralf chose to compete despite the recent death of their mother Elisabeth.
On 20 April 2003, Michael Schumacher started from pole position at Imola and won the 62-lap race ahead of Räikkönen and Barrichello. Ralf Schumacher briefly led after overtaking his brother at the start but relinquished the lead during the first pit stops.
The result gave Ferrari and Michael Schumacher their first victory of the 2003 season. Räikkönen extended his Drivers' Championship lead to 13 points over Coulthard, while McLaren stretched their Constructors' lead to 19 points as Ferrari moved ahead of Renault into second.
