Following two previous editions held in Singapore (2010) and Nanjing (2014), the International Olympic Committee awarded the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics to Buenos Aires, Argentina, marking the first time the games would leave Eurasia and expanding the Olympic movement's geographic reach into South America.
From 6 to 18 October 2018, Buenos Aires hosted the III Summer Youth Olympic Games, an international multi-sport, cultural, and educational event. The games were the first Summer Youth Olympics held in the Western and Southern hemispheres, building on South America's recent Olympic hosting experience from the 2016 Rio Games.
The Buenos Aires games marked the final Summer Youth Olympics held under IOC President Thomas Bach before the next edition, originally planned for 2022, was postponed to 2026 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, interrupting the established four-year cycle of the Summer Youth Olympic Games.
