Originally scheduled for June–July 2020 across Argentina and Colombia, the tournament was postponed by CONMEBOL due to the COVID-19 pandemic, mirroring UEFA's concurrent decision to defer Euro 2020. Colombia was subsequently stripped of co-hosting rights amid domestic political protests, and Argentina was removed over COVID-19 concerns, leaving Brazil as the sole host.
The 47th Copa América was held entirely in Brazil from 13 June to 10 July 2021. Ten CONMEBOL nations competed, with no guest nations participating for the first time since 1991. Argentina defeated host and title-holder Brazil 1–0 in the final to claim the championship.
Argentina secured their first senior international title in 28 years and equalled Uruguay's all-time record of 15 Copa América titles. The victory qualified Argentina to face UEFA Euro 2020 winners Italy in the inaugural CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions in 2022, while Brazil became the first host nation to fail to win the Copa América on home soil.
