The International Olympic Committee and ski governing bodies sought to expand the alpine skiing programme at the 1952 Winter Games in Oslo, Norway, adding new disciplines while reassessing the combined event's status as a standalone medal competition.
Six alpine skiing events were contested between 14 and 20 February 1952, with downhill and giant slalom held at Norefjell in Krødsherad and slalom events at Rødkleiva in Oslo. The giant slalom made its Olympic debut, while the combined was removed as a medal event.
The removal of the combined as an Olympic medal event lasted until 1988, though it continued at World Championships as a 'paper race' from 1954 through 1980, calculated from results across three separate events rather than a dedicated competition.
