The International Ski Federation banned top World Cup racers Ingemar Stenmark and Hanni Wenzel for accepting promotional payments directly rather than through their national federations, while Marc Girardelli was ineligible having not yet obtained Luxembourg citizenship and unable to compete for Austria.
Six alpine skiing events were contested at Bjelašnica and Jahorina between 13 and 19 February 1984 during the Sarajevo Winter Olympics. A blizzard caused significant weather delays, forcing both downhill races to be postponed and run after the giant slalom events, reversing the planned competition schedule.
The absence of Stenmark, Wenzel, and Girardelli reshaped the competitive field, opening medals to athletes who might otherwise have faced stronger opposition. The program remained at six events for the last time; the 1988 Calgary Games expanded to ten events with the return of the combined and the introduction of Super G.
