Taliban insurgents targeted Observation Post Bari Alai on the perimeter of Nishagam in Kunar Province, exploiting the vulnerability of an isolated ISAF coalition outpost. The attack was part of ongoing Taliban efforts to challenge foreign military presence in eastern Afghanistan during 2009.
On 1 May 2009, Taliban fighters launched a coordinated assault on OP Bari Alai, successfully overrunning the position. All three US soldiers stationed at the post were killed in action. A small number of survivors included two Latvian soldiers and some Afghan troops.
The fall of OP Bari Alai marked the first complete Taliban overrun of a coalition outpost during the War in Afghanistan, representing a significant tactical success for insurgents and raising concerns about the security of remote ISAF positions throughout the country.
