Cause

Australian forces of the Overwatch Battle Group (West) entered the Iraqi town of Al Rumaythah to hold discussions at the Iraqi Army barracks. A large number of unidentified Iraqi insurgents chose this moment to engage the Australians in what was later assessed as a well-coordinated ambush.

Event

During the morning of 26 September 2006, Australian troops came under intense fire from insurgents in Al Rumaythah, Al-Muthanna province. The exchange of fire lasted nearly an hour, during which a number of insurgents were killed. Australian forces ultimately withdrew in good order, sustaining no casualties.

Consequence

The battle had few tactical consequences and no strategic impact on the broader Iraq War. However, it was historically notable as a rare combat contact for Australian forces in Iraq after the Invasion's end and marked the first time Australian troops were directly targeted by Iraqi insurgents.
