Travancore, under King Marthanda Varma and Dewan Ramayyan Dalawa, had been expanding northward, conquering Kayamkulam and Ambalapuzha. When Travancore invaded the princely state of Ambalapuzha, the Thekkumkur kingdom dispatched its army to assist in resisting the expansion, prompting Marthanda Varma to turn his forces directly against Thekkumkur after the fall of Champakassery.
In September 1749, the forces of Travancore and Thekkumkur clashed at Changanacherry in a decisive engagement. Travancore's military campaign, led by Ramayyan Dalawa, proved successful, resulting in a clear defeat for the Thekkumkur army and effectively ending Thekkumkur's ability to resist Travancore's northward expansion.
The defeat stripped Thekkumkur of its regional dominance. Travancore absorbed Thekkumkur's territories and extended its empire northward to the southern bank of the Meenachilar river, consolidating Marthanda Varma's control over a significantly larger portion of what is now Kerala.
