During the Spanish Reconquista, ongoing territorial conflict between the Emirate of Granada and the Kingdom of Castile created conditions for military confrontation in the Province of Granada. Castilian forces, led by the Order of Calatrava under Grand Master Ruy Pérez Ponce de León acting on behalf of King Sancho IV, advanced toward Granadan territory north of the city of Granada.
In 1295, near the town of Iznalloz in the Province of Granada, troops of the Emirate of Granada commanded by Sultan Muhammad II engaged and fought a Castilian army led by the Grand Master of the Order of Calatrava. The battle resulted in a decisive and catastrophic defeat for the Castilian and Calatrava forces.
The defeat was severe for Castile and the Order of Calatrava. Grand Master Ruy Pérez Ponce de León died from wounds sustained during the battle, representing a significant loss of leadership for the military order. The outcome reinforced Granadan defensive strength against Castilian incursions in the region during this period of the Reconquista.
