Russian forces had captured the former Soviet military base and airstrip at Khankala, a strategically vital position controlling the Rostov-Baku highway and blocking direct access to Grozny from Argun. Chechen separatists sought to dislodge the Russian military presence by launching a heavy-weapons assault on the base.
On 28 December 1994, Chechen separatist forces attacked the Russian military base at Khankala using heavy weapons. Russian paratroopers, including elements of the 104th Guards Airborne Division, defended the base and repelled the assault.
The Chechen attack failed entirely. The separatist forces were driven back, losing six tanks and an armoured personnel carrier in the process, while Russia retained control of the strategically important Khankala base and its commanding position over access routes into Grozny.
