In 794, Emir Hisham I of Córdoba launched military incursions against the Kingdom of Asturias that resulted in heavy losses for the Emirate, most notably at the Battle of Lutos where one of his generals was killed. Seeking to avenge these defeats, the Emir organized a new campaign into Asturian territory.
In 795, Córdoban forces under the brothers Abd al-Karim and Abd al-Malik ibn Abd al-Walid ibn Mugaith engaged Asturian forces at Las Babias. The battle was part of the ongoing Córdoban effort to reassert military dominance on the Iberian peninsula after the setbacks of 794.
The battle ended in a victory for the Emirate of Córdoba, partially redressing the military losses suffered in the previous year's campaigns and temporarily restoring Córdoban prestige in the ongoing conflict with the Kingdom of Asturias.
