Ongoing rivalry and military conflict between the Aq Qoyunlu confederation under Uzun Hasan and the Ottoman Empire led to confrontations in eastern Anatolia during 1473. The two powers competed for dominance over the region, prompting military campaigns by both sides.
On August 1, 1473, Aq Qoyunlu cavalry employed a feigned retreat tactic near Malatya, drawing Ottoman forces to the left bank of the Euphrates River. There, the Ottoman officer Khassa Murad was defeated, dealing a setback to Ottoman arms in the engagement.
Following the defeat of Khassa Murad, the Ottoman sultan dispatched an envoy to Uzun Hasan proposing peace. Uzun Hasan rejected the offer and advanced toward Tarjan, prolonging the conflict that would culminate in the larger Battle of Otlukbeli later that same month.
