Repeated military defeats had eroded Zulu king Dingane's authority among his people. His brother Mpande broke away with a faction of followers and forged an alliance with Boer settlers led by Andries Pretorius, positioning himself as a rival claimant to Zulu leadership.
On 29 January 1840, Mpande's forces attacked Dingane's compound, bringing the two factions into direct armed conflict at Maqongqo. Mpande and his allies emerged victorious, decisively defeating the forces loyal to Dingane.
Following the battle, Dingane was murdered shortly thereafter. Mpande was then installed as king of the Zulus, ending the civil war and establishing a new line of rule that would endure for decades.
