In June 1987, the Sri Lanka Army's Vadamarachchi Operation swept LTTE militants from the Nelliady area in the Jaffna District. The operation left an army camp established at Nelliady Central College, creating a high-value military target that LTTE sought to strike in retaliation and to reassert its presence in the region.
On 5 July 1987, a force of 50 LTTE militants launched an assault on the Sri Lanka Army camp at Nelliady Central College. During the attack, LTTE fighter Captain Miller conducted the organization's first suicide bombing, driving an explosive-laden vehicle into the camp. The battle resulted in 19 Sri Lankan soldiers killed and 31 wounded, making it the deadliest engagement for government forces since the Vadamarachchi Operation.
The battle introduced suicide bombing as a tactic into the Sri Lankan Civil War, a method the LTTE would employ extensively in subsequent years. The death toll inflicted on the Sri Lankan Army underscored the continued strength of LTTE despite the recent Vadamarachchi Operation and demonstrated the group's willingness to deploy novel and devastating forms of attack.
