Following the loss of Svetigrad in 1448, Skanderbeg received support from Alfonso the Magnanimous and devised a plan to retake the fortress. His strategy called for an invasion of Macedonia to ravage the surrounding countryside and draw Svetigrad's garrison into the open, weakening Ottoman control in the region.
While executing the Macedonian invasion, Skanderbeg's army was intercepted near Tetovo in the fields of Polog by an Ottoman force under Ibrahim Pasha, which had been assembling to invade Albania. Skanderbeg quickly routed this force, eliminating the threat it posed before it could cross into Albanian territory.
After destroying the Ottoman force, Skanderbeg's army continued its plundering campaign through the region before withdrawing to Debar. The victory temporarily neutralized the Ottoman offensive capacity against Albania and confirmed Skanderbeg's ability to operate offensively deep into Ottoman-held Macedonia.
