The Vijayanagara Empire under Aliya Rama Raya had long dominated Deccan politics, frequently intervening in rivalries among the Deccan sultanates. This persistent interference prompted the sultanates to set aside their mutual conflicts and form a unified military alliance against Vijayanagara.
On 23 January 1565, the allied Deccan sultanates met the Vijayanagara forces at Rakshasi–Tangadi near Talikota. The battle resulted in a decisive defeat of the Vijayanagara army and the death of Aliya Rama Raya. Primary sources offer contrasting accounts, making precise reconstruction of the engagement difficult.
The defeat at Talikota led to the eventual collapse of the Vijayanagara Empire as a dominant political force. Deccan politics were fundamentally reconfigured, with power redistributing among the sultanates. Later orientalist and nationalist historians framed the battle as a Hindu–Muslim civilizational clash, a characterization contemporary scholars reject.
